Our Present Location at 1805 S Hillside

Our History

Hillside Feed and Seed originally opened its doors in 1949 and was purchased by Orville Sander and his wife in 1959. His son George and his wife Cathey joined the business when it moved in 1986. Originally they had only offered the standard farm store fare, but as the years went on the “And” grew to encompass a little bit of everything, from lawn ornaments and gardening supplies, to jams jellies and candy.

The store started off as a farm store on the fringes of the city, but as the city grew the store was encompassed by neighborhoods making it feel like it was always a part of the landscape. Hillside feed has been a cornerstone of the community, feeding furry and feathered friends, as well as enabling and educating growers of all skill levels and interests. They have also worked hard to support non-profits and other small businesses.

Whether you come to Hillside Feed for plants, feed, seed, or the cats (we know who you are 😉) we thank you for your enthusiastic support for all these years. The store now has had 5 generations of Sander working there, and we have grown up loving the place and the people who shop there. It’s because of you that we are able to keep loving what we do, and we hope to continue serving and supporting the community for many years to come.

Our original location at 1623 S Hillside.  The building was erected in 1949 by a Mr. Fred Wagle, the original proprietor
of Hillside Feed and Seed Store.  The building stood on the present site of the CVS Drug store drive-thru lane.  The side entrance and "ghost" sign were unknown to George, who spent most of his childhood in the area.
